Pocket Mortys includes a powerful first action. The moment I start to play, I am drawn from the loyal visual layout and composing that mirror the quirks of this humorous Adult Swim animated series. Nonetheless, it plays its hands very early on, and after I had burnt during the first couple of hours, it was disappointing to locate Pocket Mortys is hardly more than a diluted Pokémon imitator.
Drawing heavily from the incident in which the eponymous duo matches many alternate-dimension variations of these, Pocket Mortys cleverly transforms the concept to a game about collecting Mortys separated in their Ricks, so we see heaps of goofy variants on Morty's respective layout. Many Mortys have three eyes while some others have none, some game beards and hippie garb, along with many others are dreadful test areas or Cronenbergian nightmares.
Every Morty plays almost identically.
However, as soon as you catch Morty variants and use them struggle, their comparable transfer sets and a restricted variety of distinct foundation forms cause each Morty to practically play identically, even though distinct names for their own abilities.
Trying to ape the Pokémon different types, Mortys can also be assigned a stone, paper, or scissors "kind" with flaws and strengths. It is capable, but disappointingly shallow at its lack of alternatives and strategy - it is more of a parody of the traditional game mechanic compared to a fascinating implementation of this.
The majority of the animated series' in-jokes and testimonials appear in the stock products, where supplies such as a Poke Ball or even HP potion are substituted using a Turbulent Juice tube, Plutonium and Serum shots, and technical things such as the instant-win Mr. Meeseeks Box along with stat-boosting Mega Seeds. Many personalities have cameos and recurring looks, such as Birdperson along with also the Council of Ricks. Dialogue between characters mostly captures the tone of this series, together with Rick's flippant and dismissive cynicism playing against Morty's unbridled stress and encouraging personalities keeping their own identities.
In its finest moments, Pocket Mortys has a similar texture and tone into its own source material.
The bigger problem, however, is just one frequently found in accredited mobile games: there is hardly any connective tissue involving everything occurring, leaving the whole game sense more as a best-of highlight reel of callback gags and references to the events of this series, instead of a special and unique experience.
This frequently left me wondering who just Pocket Mortys is for. It references the jokes and jokes its own flair on event during, but what found within is basically a re-hash of jokes and scenarios already covered in the Adult Swim show. The usage of distinct Mortys spread across measurements was smart at first, but rapidly becomes about as intriguing since stumbling across a Rattata or even Magikarp. It borrows in the Pokémon games in almost every imaginable way, by the artwork design down to the usage of "Pathetic!" Instead of "It is not so powerful..." in conflict, but not one of its own Pokémon-inspired facets are as profound or well-developed as that of Nintendo's classic franchise. It is one protracted joke staying able to be somewhat enjoyable during, but loses strong momentum early on.
It sometimes makes smart use of its source material through references and in-jokes, but each of the callbacks on the planet do not compensate for mechanisms that are a pale shadow of Pokémon, with no enough original notions or even new humor to create it into an adventure capable of standing by itself.
